Beef Bulgogi

 Ingredients:

For the Marinade:

  • 1.5 pounds (680g) thinly sliced beef (ribeye or sirloin is ideal)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small piece of ginger (about 1-inch), minced
  • 1 pear, peeled and grated (or substitute with apple)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey or corn syrup (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon mirin (rice wine)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)

For Serving:

  • Cooked white rice
  • Lettuce leaves (for wrapping)
  • Kimchi or other Korean side dishes (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Marinade:

    • In a mixing bowl, combine the minced garlic, minced ginger, grated pear, soy sauce, sugar, honey (if using), mirin, sesame oil, sesame seeds, and black pepper. Mix well until the sugar has dissolved.
  2. Marinate the Beef:

    • Place the thinly sliced beef and sliced onion in a large resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish.
    • Pour the marinade over the beef and onions, ensuring that they are well coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours, or ideally overnight. The longer you marinate, the more flavorful your beef will be.
  3. Cook the Beef:

    • Heat a grill, grill pan, or a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Remove the beef and onions from the marinade and let any excess liquid drip off.
    • Grill or stir-fry the beef and onions in batches for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they are cooked through and have a nice char.
  4. Serve:

    • Serve the beef bulgogi hot with steamed white rice and lettuce leaves.
    • To enjoy, take a lettuce leaf, place a small scoop of rice and a piece of bulgogi inside, and wrap it up. You can also add a dab of ssamjang (a spicy Korean dipping sauce) or kimchi for extra flavor.
    • Garnish with chopped green onions.

Beef bulgogi is a delightful dish that combines sweet, savory, and slightly spicy flavors. It's a fun and interactive meal when served with lettuce wraps. Enjoy this Korean classic with family and friends for a memorable dining experience!
